TYRE RECORD SYSTEMS

Tyre records should be kept in order to control tyres, and their costs.

Many operations do not use tyre records, believing them to be waste of time, or alternatively, too much effort, for the benefit they produce – this is not so.

Accurate tyre records, based on cost per km per tyre, is the only way in which an operator will know whether he is using the right tyre for his operation, and furthermore, whether he is removing tyres from operation at the right time.

There are good computer based programmes available. Please contact your local Continental Area Manager for advice.

An effective record system will show the operator the following:

  1. Which tyre make & style is best suited for his operation
  2. Which is the best retreader, and style of tread for different wheel positions
  3. When it becomes uneconomical to continue to retread a particular tyre
  4. Which type of vehicle gives him the best possible tread life
  5. Drivers that are “heavy” on tyres
  6. Operations that are heavy on tyres – for costing out / or quoting on an operation
  7. Future budgeting for tyres
  8. The effectiveness of a Tyre Care & Maintenance Programme, & Personnel
  9. Vehicles in the fleet that are heavy on tyres – a vehicle may, at some time, have been involved in an accident, and had not been repaired correctly, now resulting in heavy tyre usage

Advice on the implementation of a tyre record system is available from Continental Tyre Area Managers.

A final point on tyre records, is to carry out regular SCRAP TYRE ANALYSES on the tyres that have completed their life in your operation, as this will tell you a lot, when used in conjunction with the record system, as to what is WRONG with the operation, and the possible areas that need attention.
